Speech Writer and Special Assistant Position
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the United States located in Washington, DC is seeking to recruit a motivated and diligent individual to be a Speech Writer and Special Assistant to Ambassador Soo-hyuck Lee.
This individual will work directly in the Ambassador’s office, and will play a key role in ensuring the smooth functioning of a large Embassy. Working with Ambassador Lee and other senior staff at the Embassy, this individual will be responsible for:
• Drafting speeches, official correspondence, and other pertinent communication materials on behalf of the Ambassador and other senior Embassy officials, as needed;• Manage the Ambassador’s schedule, including arranging meetings with US Government partners, think tanks, businesses, and other groups;• Receiving and responding to incoming invitations for the Ambassador in a timely and appropriate manner;• Providing the Ambassador with up-to-date coverage on current foreign and domestic news topics each morning during a daily press meeting;• Monitor important issues related to Korea and Korea-U.S. relations;• Assisting the political, economic and congressional sections of the Embassy by helping to write and edit speeches and performing relevant research and analysis on political developments and foreign policy issues related to Korea and the United States;• Promptly completing all other requests made by the diplomatic staff of the Embassy related to the diplomatic functions of the Embassy; and• Developing and maintaining a contact list of national and local media.
The successful candidate should have excellent writing and research abilities, intercultural communication skills, and be self-motivated and cognizant of how to work well individually and as a team in order to better communicate Korea's policy to the American public.
This appointment would be on a contract, basis initially for one year, subject to renewal. Remuneration will be approximately $40,000~$50,000 a year, depending on the level of qualification and experience of the successful candidate.
Qualifications
Candidates must either have a doctorate degree in International Relations, Communications, Korean Studies, or comparable field, or have a master's degree and at least three years of relevant professional experience; excellent communication and writing skills; an understanding of Korean culture, policy, and history, as well as an interest in ROK-US relations. Previous experience of working in an intercultural setting is desirable. Candidates must have legal status to work in the U.S. (Please note the Embassy of Korea does not sponsor work permits or visas)
